2008 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class

2008 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class

With prices that go well into the triple-digit range, the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class may seem expensive at first glance, but it ranks as one of the most luxurious--and technologically advanced--coupes available at any price, and it costs significantly less than luxury coupes from prestige brands such as Bentley. With exclusive materials, the utmost interior comfort, standout high-tech features such as Distronic Plus and the night-vision system, and straight-line performance that rivals many sports cars, the CL550 and CL600 are good for those who want exclusivity and luxury without sacrificing comfort. The top-performance AMG versions have a different appeal, to those who value exclusivity and lap times yet still want the comforts of a true luxury vehicle.

The Mercedes-Benz CL-Class is offered in four different versions. The CL550 is powered by a 388-horsepower, 5.5L V8 and seven-speed automatic transmission; next up is the CL600, which gets a 6.0L V12 engine that makes 510 horsepower and a noteworthy 612 lb-ft of torque. At the top of the line, at least for those interested in performance and exclusivity, are the two AMG versions; the CL63 AMG model gets a 518-horsepower, 6.3L V8, while the top-performance CL65 AMG gets a twin-turbocharged, 6.0L V12 engine making 604 horsepower and 738 lb-ft.

The CL550 can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in only 5.4 seconds, according to Mercedes-Benz, but the top-of-the-line CL65 AMG can blast to 60 mph in a stunning 4.2 seconds; it takes only 116 feet to brake from 60 mph to a standstill. Both AMG vehicles use engines that have been modified extensively for high-performance use and are hand-assembled with a "one man, one engine" philosophy. They also include huge brakes and wheels to handle the extra power, plus firmer suspension damping and a specially tuned version of the ESP stability control system.

The entire line of CL-Class coupes, which parallels the S-Class sedan, serves as the technology flagship of the Mercedes-Benz line with a series of leading technology features available, some not offered on any other production vehicle. Standouts include the sophisticated active body control suspension, standard on all models, which almost instantaneously adjusts damping response to driving conditions; Distronic Plus cruise control, which will maintain a safe distance relative to traffic ahead and even bring the vehicle to a full stop, starting again when traffic moves; and a night-vision system that bathes the road ahead in infra-red light.

Safety features are aplenty. Dual front side, side curtain, and knee bags are included, along with Brake Assist Plus, and an advanced Pre-Safe system that anticipates a potential crash and primes safety systems.

This year, there's a 40th Anniversary Edition of the CL65 offered in a very limited number of 40 worldwide. The special version includes unique appearance cues inside and out, including diamond-pattern Nappa leather seats, a color-coordinated Alcantara headliner, and carbon-fiber interior trim. But what's most noticeable from a distance is the distinctive Alubeam Liquid Metal paint, made up of pigment particles that are a fraction of the size of those in conventional automotive paint. The paint reflects light more evenly and intensely, according to the automaker, with increased scratch resistance.
After being completely redesigned for 2007, the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class returns for 2008 with a new 40th Anniversary Edition of the powerful, twin-turbo V12 CL65 AMG model, including two-tone diamond-pattern Nappa leather seats, carbon-fiber interior trim, a special Alcantara headliner inside and a unique Alubeam Liquid Metal finish outside. There will be only 40 made worldwide, including 20 planned for U.S. delivery.
Interior comfort; top-technology luxury features; loads of standard safety items; potent performance; exclusive AMG models.
